School uniform
At Carlton Hill we do not have a school uniform. We prefer to allow children and parents / carers a choice in what they wear to school. We simply expect our children to be dressed sensibly and practically for a busy day at school, taking into account the activities timetabled for their class and the weather. We do have an optional school sweatshirt should parents, carers and pupils wish to choose this option.
We do not subscribe to the idea that children need a uniform to instil respect and good behaviour. We are proud of our children’s behaviour at Carlton Hill. We are also aware of the pro-school uniform argument that children can become competitive about their clothes, but at Carlton Hill this is not an issue raised by children or parents.
We do set a few simple rules on what children should and shouldn’t wear:
- For children’s safety, we do not allow any jewellery (other than small stud earrings for pierced ears).
- Make up and false nails are inappropriate for primary aged children.
- High heeled shoes and flip-flops are not practical footwear for school.
- We do ask that all clothing and belongings are labelled with your child’s name.
- We do expect your child to have a change of clothes for PE lessons. A PE kit includes tracksuit bottoms, shorts and a tee shirt (in their house colour.) They also need trainers for outside PE. Dance and PE will be barefoot in the hall. Children do not wear their PE kit to school; they change for PE at school.
- When doing swimming lessons, children must wear a swimsuit rather than a two-piece bikini; wear short swimming shorts rather than long board shorts and long hair must be tied back. School will provide swimming hats.
