How to apply for a place at a primary school in Brighton & Hove.

You can apply online for a school place if you:
- live in Brighton & Hove and your child needs to start school for the first time
- live in Brighton & Hove and your child needs to move up to junior or secondary school in September
- want your child to move to a Brighton & Hove school at any other time
You can also apply for a school place by printing and completing a paper form.

What happens if you apply late
If you apply late for a school place it is less likely that you will be offered a place at one of your preferred schools and you may have to wait to get an offer of a school place after the National Offer Day.
You must provide Brighton & Hove City Council with independent supporting evidence of the good reason, or your application will be treated as late.
When you’ll hear from Brighton & Hove City Council
If you apply online or give an email address on your application, Brighton & Hove City Council will send you an email on the national offer day to let you know which school place has been offered to your child.
If you apply by post and don’t give Brighton & Hove City Council an email address, they will send you a letter in the first class post on the same day.

Admissions
Brighton & Hove Unitary Authority's admission policy admits children to school who are four years old by the end of August before the commencement of the school year.
During the summer term there is a meeting for new parents/carers to discuss ways in which the children's start at school can be as happy and positive as possible. The Reception teacher and teaching assistant will visit all of the Early Years' settings (for example: day nurseries, childminders, playgroups and children’s centres) during the Summer Term. We also offer a 'Get Ready for Reception Course' during the Summer Term so that the children and parents can get to know each other and become familiar with the school before starting in September.
In September, the new reception children are admitted over a period of three weeks, youngest first, so that the children can be received gradually into a settled environment. Parents/carers are encouraged to try and leave the children as soon as possible to help them get into the classroom routines. If a child has particular difficulties in settling, their teacher would make specific arrangements with you to support you and your child.

The arrangements for the admission of children to this school at age 4 are made by the Council.

A hard copy can be obtained from the School Admissions Section, Children & Young People’s Trust, PO BOX 2503, King's House, Grand Avenue, HOVE BN3 2SU (tel: 01273 293653). A copy is also available for inspection in the school.
However, parents/carers may find it helpful to know that, if there are insufficient places available to meet demand, these will be allocated to children in accordance with the following list of priorities:
- Children in the care of the local authority, or who were previously in the care of the local authority;
- Children with compelling medical or other exceptional reasons for attending the school;
- Children who in the coming September will have a brother or sister at the school or at a linked junior school;
- Children transferring between a linked infant and junior school;
- Other children
If it should be necessary to decide between children within any of these priority groups, this will be done by giving the places to those children who live closest to the school.
Our school’s admission arrangements for pupils with SEN or disabilities
In keeping with the Brighton and Hove Admission Policy, the same admission arrangements are made for all pupils. Children with SEN are admitted to Carlton Hill School without prejudice. In order to best plan to meet the needs of pupils, we welcome information from parents or carers about a child’s specific needs.
